Triple Bill: Agnès Varda in California (15) - screening
Cinema on Sunday
Summerhall - Red Lecture Theatre
Lift Share (15)
Two strangers meet through an online lift share website: a young Romanian woman, Marina, (Ana Ularu) in search of a child that was forcibly taken from her; and a Scottish musician, Murdoch (Mark Rowley), returning to the Isle of Harris to face up to the death of his violent, estranged father. As they drive the long miles from Edinburgh to the Outer Hebrides, the film moves between present and future time frames as each character imagines what they might do on arrival.
This film was shot in the Summer of 1968 in Oakland (California) around the meetings set up by the Black Panthers Party to free Huey Newton, one of their leaders, and to turn his trial into a political debate. They tried and succeeded in catching Americans’ attention.
Uncle Yanco/Oncle Yanco
While in San Francisco for the promotion of her latest film in October 1967, Agnès Varda, tipped off by her friend Tom Luddy, gets to know a relative she had never heard of before, Jean Varda, nicknamed “Yanco”. This hitherto unknown uncle lives on a boat in Sausalito, is a painter, has adopted a hippie lifestyle and loves life. The meeting is a very happy one.
